Spawning Timeline by Region
Deep South
FL, LA, MS, AL, GA, TX
Spawning starts as early as late February when water hits 56°F. Peak activity in March.
Mid-South
TN, AR, NC, SC, OK, KY
Primary spawn window is April through mid-May. Watch for water temps climbing past 58°F.
Midwest
MO, IL, IN, OH, IA, KS
Spawn peaks in May. Cold snaps can delay activity — monitor water temp closely.
Northern States
MN, WI, MI, PA, NY, NE
Latest spawn in the country — late May through June. Some lakes don't peak until early July.
Three Phases of the Spawn
Pre-Spawn (Water 50°F–56°F)
Crappie move from deep winter holes toward shallow staging areas. They school near creek channels, brush piles, and drop-offs in 8–15 feet of water. Best lures: jigs, minnows, and small swimbaits worked slowly.
Spawn (Water 56°F–68°F)
Males build nests in 1–6 feet of water near cover — stumps, laydowns, docks, and reeds. Females move in to deposit eggs. Best approach: sight-fish with light jigs, tube baits, or bobber-and-minnow rigs around visible beds.
Post-Spawn (Water 68°F+)
Males guard fry briefly, then both sexes retreat to deeper structure. Fish are scattered and harder to pattern. Best strategy: spider-rig or troll crankbaits over deeper brush piles and ledges.
Pro Tips for Spawn Fishing
🎯 Target Sheltered Bays
Protected coves warm faster than main lake. Crappie often spawn here 1–2 weeks before open water.
🪵 Find the Cover
Brush piles, fallen trees, dock pilings, and stake beds are prime nesting areas. No cover = no crappie.
🌤️ Fish Warm Afternoons
During early spawn, afternoons after sunny days push water temps up. Crappie respond by moving shallower.
⚖️ Go Light
Use 4–6 lb test line and 1/16–1/8 oz jigs. Spawning crappie in clear, shallow water spook easily.
